Bio

Mike's love of travel and art, by seeing amazing and interesting sites and peoples, began at a young age with living all over the United States including Canada and Cuba, following around his father's Major and Minor League Baseball career in the 40's and 50's. However, this acorn fell far from that tree as art was more of a creative, desirable lifestyle than sports (except for the never-ending deadlines). His first epiphany of the magnificence of color took place at a ballpark while, as a toddler, he ascended the many giant steps of a dark, foreboding stone and girder dungeon-like arena that finally, thankfully, opened up to an outside display of grandiose emerald greens, bright terra cottas, blue skies, cotton clouds, and multi-colored billboards; much like Dorothy opening the door to Munchkin Land. That was the hook, but the skeleton in art and photography had to be a basis of understanding of black and white and chiaroscuro effects to build color upon. Schooling was absolutely necessary. Mike graduated in 1966 with a B.S. in Graphic Design, University of Bridgeport. He also attended Boston University and Fla. Southern College and took continuing creative courses at UT and Walters State Community College. He spent four years in the U.S. Air Force, 1966-1970 during the VietNam era in Airborne Radar Repair and Aircraft Maintenance Deficiency Analysis; and thereafter, a 40+ year career as a graphic artist for various graphic, print, and advertising agencies in New York, Connecticut, Florida, and Tennessee, with the last 20 years at Shelby Williams Furniture Industries in Morristown as Art Director/Director of Advertising. Supposedly retired, but still works part time as a 'Plant Manager' at Career Professionals, Inc. (He comes in every Wednesday and waters the plants!) and volunteers at church and many local and state-wide non-profit organizations. Otherwise, he's out enjoying touring the country on his Harley seeking inspiration for the next art project. Mike also enjoys working in all 'way-out-of-the-box' mediums such as sand, hot glue renderings, layered wood, layered fence wire, all taking up 2 rooms and half a garage as home studios much to his wife, Marge's chagrin. He has displayed regionally in many juried art shows and has so many ribbons sitting in a drawer that he forgot which goes to which.
