I have taken a couple of workshops by Roger Bansemer, who has a show on PBS: "Painting and Travel with Roger and Sarah Bansemer." Other than that, my only art training is practice, self-study and observation. I've always had an interest in art, beginning with a high school painting class (although my teacher was not at all encouraging). For many years a career as a graphic artist was enough to satisfy my art interest, but when that ended, I began to think again about painting. When I started painting on canvas, I could "see" in my mind how I wanted the finished painting to look, but getting it from my mind, through my hands and onto the canvas has always been a challenge. That's what keeps me painting: there's always the hope that the next painting might be the one where I get it right.
I belong to the Abingdon Va. Arts Depot and Kingsport and Morristown TN art associations and Women Painters of the Southeast. I have exhibited in shows at the Arts Depot and Virginia Highlands Juried Art Show (honorable mention); Rogersville TN's Heritage Days Festival Art Show (first place and best in show); solo show at Hale Springs Inn in Rogersville, TN; Autumn With Topsail (second place) at Topsail Island, NC, and 2016 WPSE Juried Art Show.
I was born in Tazewell, VA and have lived in Northern Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, but I feel like I came "home" when I moved to Tennessee 35 years ago. I paint primarilty in acrylics, and both love them and hate them for their fast-drying properties; but have recently begun trying my hand at oils. My favorite subject is realistic landscapes and I find plenty of inspiration in the mountains and rural areas of this part of the country.
